The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has said residents should not conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of Mount Raung'€™s crater although it has decreased the volcano'€™s alert status from siaga (alert) to waspada (caution).

The center'€™s head of the volcano observation and survey division for western Indonesia, Hendra Gunawan, said as quoted by tempo the organization decreased Mt. Raung'€™s status from alert level 3 to alert level 2 starting from 3 p.m. local time on Monday.

He said during the past week volcanic activities on Mt. Raung, which is 3,332 meters above the sea's surface, had continued to decline and in stages its condition had returned to being stable.

Head of the Bondowoso Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Kukuh Triyatmoko said that the Bondowoso administration had not yet received an official notification on the new status of Mt. Raung from the PVMBG.

With the lowered status, he said, emergency response activities in Mt. Raung would return to normal. With no emergency response status, he added, the agency would withdraw facilities such as temporary shelters, public kitchens and toilets from the disaster site.

Edi Purnomo, the head of the technical affairs unit at Noto Hadinegoro Airport in Jember regency, East Java, said that with the new status the airport could operate normally.

Earlier, Mt. Raung'€™s volcanic activities had forced the airport to close operations due to thick volcanic ash. (nov/ebf)
