Fashion Rocks - Designers, musicians live up the street

There was a fascinating vibe going on in the parking lot of Jakarta'€™s Sarinah Thamrin Plaza, indulging the senses of mall visitors and those passing by.

When a radio station hosts a fashion show, it does it a little differently.

Radio station 87.6 Hard Rock FM Jakarta combined a fashion show with a music concert for '€œFashion Rocks 2015'€, an event conducted on a single stage.

A 7-meter high stage was erected outdoor on the nearest side to the main thoroughfare of Jl. MH Thamrin, replete with a red carpet and a seating area specially prepared for distinguished guests.

Although there were portable fences and guards surrounding the event area and that of the sponsor, the cosmetics maker Mustika Ratu Personal Care, viewers and the general public were not hampered from blending into the street-side party.

Three rising star designers, Lulu Lutfi Labibi, Stella Rissa and Yefta Gunawan, presented their latest ready-to-wear collections for the event under the arrangement of in-demand fashion stylist Ajeng Dewi Svastiari.

Themed the '€œWeight of the World'€, Ajeng selected fashion wear that told the story of a woman with a chip on her shoulder.

The event started with pop band Yovie & Nuno belting out five of their hit songs.

Ten models took the stage in Lulu'€™s designs of lurik (Javanese woven clothes in simple stripe motifs, usually worn by farmers) combined with polka-dot chiffon, lace or ethnic Timorese motifs.

Similar to some other of Lulu'€™s designs, the collection has unique cuttings that make each design a pleasure to wear on different occasions.

A simple mix-and-match could turn it from streetwear fashion into a gala outfit.

The models donned stocking masks over their heads to accentuate the theme of the event.

Eva Celia, daughter of musician Indra Lesmana and his former wife actress Sophia Latjuba, dominated the stage by singing covers and her self-written single '€œReason'€.

'€œThe stage is actually my comfort zone, but I sometimes feel like an alien on stage. I get nervous at first, but after two or three songs I become looser.

'€œIt'€™s the biggest crowd I'€™ve had over the past three years. I could feel the excitement from the crowd and it gave me an adrenaline rush,'€ she said after her well-received performance.

Her mini concert accompanied the staging of Stella Rissa'€™s collection that was specially prepared for the event.

Known for her ultra-feminine designs, Stella this time created an edgy, rock '€™n roll, ready-to-wear collection.

'€œThrough the collection I want to expose a woman who has many sides to her. A woman can be a mother, a wife, a worker, a student and a breadwinner,'€ she said.

Her designs came in electric colors of red, fuchsia and yellow, green, silver gray and soft pastel colors.

She brought in maxi- and mini-dresses as well as two-piece outfits, all of which carried similar petal-like accents on the neck, chest or around the edge of the skirts.

Each model also wore a piece of cloth covering their mouth down to the chin with marked with phrases such as '€œLet me breathe'€, '€œDiscrimination'€, '€œI can'€™t cry'€ and '€œKiss me'€.

The bridal collection of Yefta Gunawan that also came in black and red was a perfect closing to the event.

Accompaniment by live music from pop band Alexa, the models strutted on the stage wearing makeup that made them look like a sad brides as the black mascara on their faces smudged a trail of tears.

'€œFashion Rocks is the signature event of 87.6 Hard Rock FM Jakarta. It'€™s the station'€™s fifth annual event and this year we presented the country'€™s best talent on one phenomenal stage,'€ said Iwet Ramadhan, head of programs and marketing communications for MRA Broadcast Media Division, the company that manages the radio station.
