AKARTA: A fugitive motorcycle thief was shot to death by the Jakarta Police on Thursday, while another was arrested after receiving a gunshot to the leg.
The two suspects were allegedly responsible for a motorcycle theft that involved the shooting of a witness in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, in April.
The thieves were attempting to steal the vehicle when a resident named Abdurahman saw them and shouted out to attract attention. The suspects shot Abdurahman in the leg before fleeing.
'Violence was common in their thefts. They don't hesitate to hurt anyone who catches them stealing,' said the Jakarta Police's mobile detective chief. Adj. Sr. Comr. Eko Hadi Santoso on Friday.
Eko added that the thieves, thought to be part of the Lampung theft syndicate, usually stole motorcycles parked in insecure areas using a T-shaped utility key to turn on the engine.
The police seized a revolver, six 9-mm caliber bullets, three smartphones, a motorcycle, two T-shaped keys and eight smaller keys from the pair.
