eputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Taufik Kurniawan of the National Mandate Party (PAN) said that he opposed the practice of leaders of the legislative body entering the plenary hall on a red carpet and pledged that he would never allow himself to do it.
'I have never walked on the red carpet and never will,' Taufik said on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Taufik said however that he would not petition the red carpet to be removed.
He said that the red carpet might be needed by leaders of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Regional Representative Council (DPD).
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the MPR Osman Sapta Odang complained about the red carpet saying that it blocked access for non-VVIP guests who visited the House compound.
'I want it to be removed. It annoys people,' he said.
Osman said that he, as one of MPR leaders, was not consulted about the red carpet installation and blamed the House leadership for the decision.
He called the House leadership 'hungry for respect,' by installing the red carpet.
'You think people will respect you because of the carpet? People respect you because of what you really are as a human,' he said.
