Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators on Thursday questioned former North Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and his wife, Evy Susanti, as suspects in a bribery case.

The antigraft body named them as suspects for allegedly bribing three judges and a clerk at the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN).

'€œToday, the KPK is scheduled to question GPN and ES as suspects,'€ the commission'€™s head of public relations bureau, Yuyuk Andriati, said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

Apart from Gatot and Evy, she added, the KPK was also scheduled to question Fransisca Insani Rahesti, Clara Wifi Wiken and Sulaeman Taufik as witnesses in the case.

The KPK detained Gatot and Evy on Aug. 3 after they were named as suspects on July 28. They were suspected to have violated Law No. 31/1999 in reference to Law No. 20/2001 on corruption eradication and the Criminal Code (KUHP).

In its investigation, the KPK suspected that it was Gatot and Evy who had bribed the PTUN Medan judges and clerk. The case began when the KPK caught M. Yagari Bhastari (aka Gerry) red handed when he was handing over bribe money to three judges and a clerk at the PTUN Medan office on July 9. The three disgraced judges were Tripeni Irianto Putro, Amir Fauzi and Dermawan Ginting, while the clerk was Syamsir Yusfan.

Gerry was a lawyer who represented Ahmad Fuad Lubis, a civil servant at the North Sumatra administration who filed a lawsuit against the North Sumatra Prosecutors'€™ Office (Kejati). The lawsuit was related to the issuance of a letter ordering the start of the investigation issued by Kejati for an alleged misappropriation of Social Assistance (Bansos) funds.

It was suspected that Gerry had only implemented his superior'€™s order to bribe the PTUN Medan judges to rule in favor of his client. In the case, the KPK also named Kaligis as a suspect. (rad/ebf)
