tate-owned railway operator PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCI) will gradually increase the number of trains operated along Greater Jakarta lines as part of an effort to transport more commuters to Jakarta from its satellite cities.
'The number of trips will be increased from the current 884 up to 988 per day by the end of this year,' said PT KCI president director Muhammad Fadhil as quoted by tribunnews.com on Friday.
Apart from increasing the number of trips, the railway operator will also add carriages to every commuter train so that they can transport more passengers, according to Fadhi.
He said that commuter trains from Bogor station to Jakarta Kota station will be the first routes to have their trains extended to 12 carriages from the current eight to 10 carriages.
'Next year, all commuter trains serving Bogor to Jakarta Kota and Bekasi to Jakarta will have 12 carriages, those serving Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta to Serpong in Banten will have 10 carriages and those serving Duri station in West Jakarta to Tangerang in Banten, will have 10 carriages,' said Fadhil.
He revealed that the number of passengers on commuter trains in June reached 850,000 per day, up from 690,000 earlier this year. 'It is a significant increase,' he told a press conference at his office, adding that by 2019, the number of passengers each day is expected to increase to 1.2 million.
He said that PT KCJ had procured 120 more carriages. (bbn)
