Greater Jakarta: Transjabodetabek to serve residential areas

I

n a bid to reduce traffic jams in Greater Jakarta due to a large number of private vehicles, Transjabodetabek will no longer pick up passengers only from bus terminals, but from residential to office areas, a government official has said.

'€œWe will put Transjabodetabek shelters in major neighborhoods. Thus, we hope commuters will no longer drive their cars to work as they will be able to access bus services near their homes,'€ director general for land transportation at the Transportation Ministry Djoko Sasono said as quoted by Kompas.com on Monday.

He added that each Transjabodetabek bus, with a capacity of 78 passengers, could take at least 30 to 40 private cars of the road.

According to Djoko, the plan will come into effect as soon as a number of Transjabodetabek buses, which are currently being assembled in Ungaran, Central Java, are ready.

Transjabodetabek is now operating 88 buses serving four routes; to and from Bekasi and Depok, both in West Java, and Ciputat and Tangerang in Banten.

In the beginning of 2016, Transjabodetabek operator Perum Pengangkutan Penumpang Djakarta (PPD) will receive a number of buses as the first stage of the 1,000 bus rapid-transit procurement by the Transportation Ministry.
