he Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced former Jakarta Transportation Agency head Udar Pristono to five years' imprisonment for accepting Rp 78 million (US$5,347) in bribes from a company that won a tender at his agency.
Judge Joko Subagyo said the director of PT Galih Semesta bought a 2002 Toyota Kijang LSX from Udar for Rp 100 million, while the actual price was only Rp 22.42 million. The judge considered the additional payment to be part of efforts to bribe Udar in the hopes that the company would get other projects from Udar's agency. 'The defendant is proven guilty as charged,' Joko said as quoted by kompas.com.
The sentence was far below the 19-year prison term demanded by state prosecutors for multiple charges against Udar. However, in Wednesday's hearing, the judges declared that the state prosecutor had failed to prove corruption and money laundering charges, and was only able to prove that Udar had received a bribe.
Previously, prosecutors claimed that Udar had insisted on approving a procurement of Transjakarta buses worth Rp 1 trillion, even though he had allegedly been informed about the vehicles' faulty condition.
