ANOKWARI: A 6.8-magnitude quake hit West Papua province on Thursday evening, injuring at least 62 people and damaging 200 buildings.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) website reported that the quake took place on Thursday at 10:53 p.m. local time.
Its epicenter was located 31 kilometers northeast of Sorong and 68 km northeast of Raja Ampat, at a depth of 10 km.
The Sorong Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Raja Ampat BPBD, as of Friday, recorded that 17 people had suffered serious injuries and 45 others minor injuries following the quake.
The injured victims, according to the BNPB, are being treated at Sele de Solu Hospital in Sorong municipality.
'Emergency posts have been established. The Sorong BPBD doesn't have a tent to accommodate evacuees,' BNPB said.
The number of victims and damaged buildings might still increase, the BNPB added.
