taxi driver from the Blue Bird company was detained by the Jakarta Police on Thursday on charges of attacking a police officer and violating traffic regulations. The driver identified as DCT, 36, was detained for hitting a police officer who tried to ticket him. He also did not have a proper driving license, according to Djoko Purwadi, head of the vehicle subdirectorate at the Jakarta Police.
Djoko said that attacking police officers could result in a maximum five years behind bars.
The incident began when four police officers tried to disperse around 50 parked taxis around Jl. DI Pandjaitan in East Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon.
'They swarmed the road and caused a traffic jam so the police officers tried to disperse them,' he explained.
However, after the taxi drivers did not comply with the officers' request, the officers decided to ticket them.
When the police approached the taxis, one taxi tried to escape. One of the officers, Iskandar Bani Adam, stood in front of the escaping taxi to try stop the driver from fleeing.
'But he did not stop. He drove at me,' Iskandar explained. He said he jumped on the car's bonnet and kept hanging on while the car drove at high speed. 'The driver was probably afraid and panicked,' he said.
