Joining others in the 21st century looks good
oining others in the 21st century looks good. Very altruistic and nice to have the luxury of food on the table, roof over your head, money in the bank, decent education and health to think about.
What we are forgetting is that there are so many people who don't have the above and are not yet able to enjoy the '21st century'. It's those people that will need to be part of the solution. It's unlikely to be seen in my generation. I'm hoping the next generation will bring more progress.
My whole point is to highlight how there seems to be a lot of criticism, but not many solutions being discussed or shared. I for one don't have the answer to many things that ail Indonesia. I know the sickness, unfortunately I do not have the cure. I have some ideas though.
Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo is not a politician. That's what was appealing about him. The younger generation and businesspeople were tired of the usual cronyism, nepotism, etc. and that is why he won.
But the election was only narrowly won, which is indicative of just how embedded the old guard is.
It's a marathon. Sure there are going to be mistakes made. Turmoil will be part of it too.
A big reason why so many new regulations or changes have not been implemented is purely because people at lower levels are not complying. It's going to take a while.
From my perspective it's better now than 15 years ago. But still a long way to go.
I'm still hopeful for the sake of the good Indonesians who have pride and care for the future of the country. Naive as that may sound.
