UPANG: The 33rd congress of the Timor Evangelical Church (GMIT) on Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), appointed on Thursday evening Rev. Mery Kolimon as the church's leader, making her the first female leader of the GMIT since its establishment in 1947.
Mery secured the leadership after she managed to win 141 out of a total of 273 votes from 44 presbyteries, which have the right to cast six votes each, plus nine votes from outgoing GMIT executives.
'This is not the victory of my own or for any particular group. This is a victory for GMIT for agreeing to elect its leader,' Mery told reporters.
GMIT currently oversees over 2,000 churches and some 1.2 million churchgoers across the NTT and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provinces.
