Issue of the day: Rule a step toward prohibiting dog meat

Some animal welfare organizations have applauded the Jakarta administration'€™s plan to regulate dog meat distribution, hoping it could eventually lead to the prohibition of dog consumption in the nation.

With such a regulation, the administration could monitor dog meat supplies for restaurants, said Justina Sukamto, spokeswoman for the animal welfare community Republik Guguk.

The Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) revealed that every two days around 40 living dogs were sent from Bali to be consumed. Aside from Bali, the supply of dogs in Jakarta comes from Surakarta in Central Jakarta and Sukabumi in West Java.

Aussies also have a problem. Australia is home to the world'€™s third-largest dog racing industry. It is estimated they cull 18,000 greyhound dogs annually due to over breeding and dogs getting old or injured while racing.

There seems to be a market in Indonesia for dog meat. This seems the perfect solution of turning waste (the dead dogs) into a saleable item to consumers in Indonesia.

I have known quite few greyhounds from the Adopt a Greyhound program and I have found them to be such beautiful and intelligent gentle creatures.

Killing such gorgeous beings for the sake of sporting aspirations is obviously far more heinous than killing for food.

What I find strange about sports such as horse racing and greyhound racing is the fact that the people I'€™ve known whom are involved in such industries I believe love these animals; I suppose that the bliss of ignorance is something we all disingenuously and desperately cling onto.

It is probably better to stop eating meat, like bakso (meat balls), etc. Try fish. I know they are also killed as we do eat them.

Dogs are human beings'€™ best friends. I understand that the poor now concentrate on this kind of meat because it is more expensive.

The issue reminds me of a dog I used to know called Pork Chop. He suffered from incontinence and flatulence. Poor thing went missing up the hills of Puncak. Perhaps my suspicions were accurate.

Actually, it'€™s very scary to eat dog in Bali as they have a serious problem with rabies there and dogs get rabies. I wouldn'€™t want to be in the shoes of someone who ate dog meat with rabies and I am sure that no one checks the health of these dogs.

Well it all boils down to: beware dog owners! Don'€™t let a dog walk without a leash. People might catch it in order to kill it and eat the meat.

I feel responsible for my dog only. I used to work and live in Bali with all the '€œstray'€ dogs there. I felt pity for them. The guests of the hotel gave them food and water.

Actually, the Chinese and Koreans eat quite a bit of dog also. The Chileans eat guinea pig and are condemned because the animal is a common pet in North America.

I don'€™t care whose culture it is to eat dog. Asia is different and each country has its own character, culture, etc., and we, expats, have to respect that. I love my dogs, that'€™s it.
