Your letters: Innovations to help farmers

W

hether we like it or not we will need lots of organic fertilizer (OF) for our farmers; be it for planting rice, corn, soy bean, sugarcane, cassava or any other crops in the country.

In the meantime we shall also need lots of fuel to operate farmers'€™ equipment in the rice fields as well other agricultural industries. Coincidentally, both OF and the gas required by the agricultural sector are present in the accumulation of cities'€™ trash.

It so happens that every town or city has a market. The trash that these markets produce daily may smell or look awful but when fermented it produces the two important substances mentioned above.

However, this will require a place where the trash can be fermented without its stench reaching the nearby community; which we call a City Trash Fermentation Dome (CTFD).

Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama has initiated a program in which the capital city is cleaned by unemployed youth, implemented through local village chiefs. The collected city trash when permed in a CTFD will not only produce OF but also CH4 methane gas.

For practical purposes, the OF should be formed into brick-like blocks for easy handling and transport. Logically, the CH4 should be harvested first by sucking and placing it into bottles for easy handling.

Both OF and CH4 are useful for farmers who all these time have been '€œdeprived'€ of OF for their crops.

With this ready supply of OF and CH4, Governor Ahok shall be the first to supply our farmers free OF and CH4 to boost the badly needed supply of food for our rapid growing population. How can we cooperate with the government to cope with the food crises looming in front of us?
