Your letters: Roro Mendut comes to Sanata Dharma

A

s Father Driyarkara, former rector of Sanata Dharma University, says that art should be expressed, the Grisadha and Karawitan student clubs of the university performed a ballet entitled Ketangguhan di Balik Sampul Kecantikan Roro Mendut (Strength behind the cover of Roro Mendut'€™s beauty) as a part of the university'€™s 60th Dies Natalis celebration at Driyarkara Auditorium on Saturday.

FX Ouda Teda Ena, in his opening remarks as the chairperson of Dies Natalis, said that loving art, making art and performing art were the ways to be humanist. As a university with no arts faculty but a big passion for art, it surely did its very best to put on the show.

The story of Roro Mendut is about a free yet faithful woman. It is her decision to not give up something she believes to be true and valuable.

'€œBallet is a heritage that we as Indonesians have to accompany and educate us. A ballet is not only about beautiful dance and story but also about values of life as human beings, which are in line with the university'€™s goals, being both smart and humanist,'€ university rector Johanes Eka Priyatma said in the opening ceremony.

Attended by thousands of people including representatives of the Yogyakarta Tourism Agency, the show ran smoothly. All audience members seem satisfied with the performance that they enjoyed. The ballet was preceded by three dance performances from Grisadha '€” Tari Yuarni Emprit, Tari Jagones and Tari Jaipong. Additionally, Grisadha recently performed and got the most applause at the Sibu International Dance Festival in Malaysia.

The ballet performances are a biennial event organized by the Grisadha and Karawitan student clubs. The previous performance was in 2013 entitled Sang Pek Eng Tai.

A ballet is also seen as a media through which to speak to people and the authorities. While many young people choose to hold a demonstration criticizing the government, the university'€™s students decide to work hard to deliver messages of the essence of being a human being through media such as this ballet.
