Greater Jakarta: Thirteen held in North Jakarta '€˜Pak Ogah'€™ raid

N

orth Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) detained 13 people accused of causing social problems around Plumpang bridge in Semper in a crackdown on Tuesday.

North Jakarta Satpol PP chief Iyan Sofyan Hadi said his personnel had carried out the crackdown after receiving complaints from residents of the area.

'€œThese people cause problems, such as by becoming Pak Ogah [unofficial traffic attendants],'€ Iyan said on Tuesday as quoted by Beritajakarta.com.

Iyan said he had coordinated with the North Jakarta Social Agency before his personnel conducted the raid.

'€œWe also expect members of the community to inform us whenever they meet people who cause social problems,'€ he said.

Meanwhile, Kusuma, 21, who was among the 13 detained, said it was the first time he had been arrested. He said he was picked up when he was directing traffic at Jl. Plumpang in Semper and did not notice the arrival of the Satpol PP.

'€œI did not know there would be a raid because I just moved here a year ago,'€ said the native of Indramayu, West Java.

Unofficial traffic attendants have become a problem for motorists throughout Jakarta. The attendants, who frequently demand money for their services, often cause congestion because they hold up traffic at junctions on busy main roads to allow access for one or two cars from side roads.

Last month, North Jakarta Police detained 24 people identified as unofficial traffic attendants. The detainees were sent to the Social Agency to undergo rehabilitation before being eventually released.
