The groundbreaking of the constructions of apartments in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta has been delayed as the Jakarta city administration faces a number of challenges, including opposition from Vice President Jusuf Kalla and members of the House of Representatives.

'€œPak JK [Jusuf Kalla) told President [Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo] that the land in Kemayoran is a state asset that could not be developed into luxury apartments. The land should be for soccer fields and low-cost apartments,'€ said Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama as reported by kompas.com on Wednesday.

He also said members of the House'€™s Commission II had also expressed opposition to the planned apartment construction when they held a hearing with State Secretary Pratikno on Sept. 21.

Ahok said that they even rejected the central government plan to transfer the land to the city administration. '€œWe want to hold a groundbreaking, but they did not wish to allow the transfer of assets,'€ said Ahok.

The city administration planned to develop apartments for middle class citizens on a plot of land that was the site of the former Kamayoran airport. The city administration plans to use the so-called Apartemen D10 for athlete accomodation for the 2018 Asian Games before they are available to be rented by the public.

According to Ahok, the city administration has submitted a document to the State Secretary about the plan to construct the apartments. According to the document, the apartments would be for rent and be allocated for employees who could not afford to buy houses in Jakarta. (bbn)(++++)
