oekarno Hatta International Airport Customs Service and Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Fishery Products Safety Agency have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 15,000 lobster seeds, equal to Rp 450 million (US$33,300), into Singapore and Vietnam.

Soekarno Hatta Airport Customs Service spokesman Sofyan Helmi said on Thursday that the authorities uncovered the attempted smuggling after becoming suspicious of three wet suitcases carried by a suspect, identified only as BT.

Their suspicions were confirmed after X-rays showed that the suitcases contained plastic bags filled with water and sponges. They opened the suitcases and found the lobsters seeds, that are only around 2 or 3 centimeters long.

In addition, Jakarta Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Fishery Products Safety Agency head Rusnanto said that BT would be charged under Article 31 of Law No. 16/1992 on Quarantine, Animals and Plants with a maximum of three years in prison or a fine of Rp 150 million.

'€œSmuggling is threatening the existence of lobsters in Indonesia because we have not been able to cultivate lobsters,'€ Rusnanto added as quoted by wartakotalive.com.
