North Kayong regency of West Kalimantan province is proof of development under the central government's regional expansion policy, but looks forward to support for further development, the regent said last week.
Hildi Hamid, North Kayong regent, said that it was part of Ketapang regency before it was expanded into its own regency in 2007. The area of Pulau Datok Beach is the main tourist attraction, which enjoyed development from the regional expansion policy.
"We have 12 years of compulsory education for free and the regency administration also pays up to 89 percent of citizens' health premiums," Hildi said in a press statement sent to thejakartapost.com on Monday.
However, Hildi said that the regency still needed more support especially in terms of transportation access. He said that not many Indonesians knew Sukadana, North Kayong's capital city. He said that it took around five hours on boat to get to Sukadana while it took 8 hours on the road from Pontianak.
"Hopefully the situation will get better next year especially from the village funds dispersed by the central government. It has begun to be disbursed," Hildi said. (rin)(+)
