Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is 'concerned' that former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the subject of an investigation and was questioned by police.
The jailed opposition leader called for an end to the harassment of Dr Mahathir and others for speaking out against the government and its leaders.
Anwar noted that Dr Mahathir had not committed a crime when he asked questions and voiced his criticism of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.
'If this is how even Tun Dr Mahathir is treated, the democratic right of ordinary Malaysians to question and criticize the government is in serious jeopardy,' said Anwar in a statement through his lawyers.
He added that instead of investigating Dr Mahathir, Najib and the government should answer the important questions raised.
'This heavy handed response will only worsen the crisis of confidence in the PM, the government and the institutions involved in trying to silence critics,' he said.
Dr Mahathir had his statement recorded by Bukit Aman investigators at the Al-Bukhary Foundation Building at about 11 a.m. on Friday. (kes)
