The trial of former NasDem Party secretary-general Patrice Rio Capella took a new twist on Monday as a witness revealed a scheme to bribe Attorney General M. Prasetyo, who is a former grandee of the pro-government party.

Rio is standing trial for his alleged role as a middleman to lobby Prasetyo, making use of his NasDem connection with the attorney general, to halt a corruption case surrounding social aid funds implicating suspended North Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho at the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO).

Rio allegedly accepted Rp 200 million for his services.

Testifying at the court on Monday, Rio'€™s aide Francisca Insani Rahesti, who also works at the legal firm of prominent lawyer and former NasDem senior executive OC Kaligis, disclosed that Gatot'€™s wife Evi Susanti had provided US$20,000 for Prasetyo to get his support in the scheme.

'€œAfter a meeting with Rio, Evi asked me to tell Rio that she had provided $20,000 for [Prasetyo], while Rio will also have his own part later,'€ Francisca told the panel of judges.

I do hope the judges not questioning Francisca about the money for Prasteyo was just an oversight on a busy day, no?

That money is regularly used as a tool to silence or influence justice and shows how deeply rooted corruption is in this nation. What else needs to be done to fight corruption in this country, we wonder with great desperation.

Even though the problem of corruption is acute and extensive in Jakarta, Ahok is making progress, and he gives reason to hope that strong leadership and close and continuous attention of government '€œhot spots'€ can help reduce and prevent corruption.

I am optimistic we can bring down the level of corruption if Jokowi continues to be aggressive and demand results and performance from his ministers.  The fight must begin at this top level.

One scandal after another in the government. A vicious circle of deceit and lies. It'€™s no wonder the country can'€™t move forward
