Former coach Sinyo dies

JP

Former national soccer coach Sinyo Aliandoe died at the age of 77 at Mayapada Hospital, Jakarta, at 8:42 a.m. on Wednesday.

His death was confirmed by his eldest son Theodorus Aliandoe, who said his father may have died from heart failure.

'€œAs his age added up, his condition began to deteriorate. He also suffered from dementia,'€ Theo said as reported by Antara news agency. Dementia is a term for loss of memory and other mental abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Sinyo was once reported to have inadvertently gone astray, surviving on the streets for a week after he forgot how to get home. A relative had to pick him from a police station.

The former national coach, who was born in Larantuka, East Nusa Tenggara, on July 1, 1938, is remembered for taking the Indonesian soccer team close to advancing to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Indonesia topped Group 3B over India, Thailand and Bangladesh and advanced to a playoff against South Korea.

The Koreans proved too strong, however, as Indonesia lost 0-2 in Seoul in the first match on July 21, 1985, and 1-4 in Jakarta in the second match on July 30. Korea went on to beat Japan in a later playoff and qualified for Mexico, along with Iraq as Asian representatives.

Sinyo'€™s managerial skills were hailed for having developed national stars like Bambang Nurdiansyah, Rully Nere, Zulkarnain Lubis, Herry Kiswanto and Ferrel Raymond Hattu.

'€œI heard about his death,'€ Rully said as quoted by detik.com. '€œI last met him six or seven months ago. He was already suffering from memory loss.'€

As a player, Sinyo helped Persija Jakarta win the national trophy in 1964.
