Digging for the truth: House speaker Setya Novanto (center) leaves his office at the House compound in Senayan
span class="inline inline-center">
Your comments on the plan of the House of Representatives' ethics council to grill House Speaker Setya Novanto, who was accused by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said of attempting to broker a deal with gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia, which is seeking a work contract extension:
I am afraid that Mr. Setya Novanto will repeat his contemptible move to not appear at the hearing of the House's ethics council as he did in the past when the council questioned his meeting with US presidential hopeful Donald Trump. He could easily use poor health or other urgent obligations as reasons to not show up at the hearing. In our country there are no ethics in politics.

Crooks investigating crooks does not bode well for an honest result. What the hell, after all this is Indonesia, where the crooks are in charge, (except in the Jakarta gubernatorial office).

Now that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has curtailed jurisdiction for investigating House members, let's just sit back and watch which of the agencies will make this mysteriously disappear.

I'm afraid if Setya was proven guilty, he'd still get away (with a mere slap on the wrist) due to strong political support from the Gerindra Party-led coalition. Resignation? Hell no, shameless politicians are the backbone of the Indonesian government.

We'll see what the ethics council will or can do on the Freeport broker. We all know the track records of most of the lawmakers as well as those in the Cabinet, such as Setya and Luhut Panjaitan. Don't expect too much from President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo because he has difficulties in handling such cases, as former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did in the past. What we at the grassroots level can do is just to hope and pray until the people take it over.

Indonesia eyeing AEC
Indonesia, along with with nine other ASEAN member countries signed the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, an agreement that will allow the region's competitive products to circulate in a single market. Besides that, labor liberalization will also begin in certain sectors. What is your opinion on these developments and will Indonesia be able to take advantage of the single market?
