Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly has given assurances that he will issue a decree to approve the leadership of Aburizal Bakrie of the Golkar Party, following a Supreme Court ruling on a dispute over the party leadership.
He said, however, that the decree would be issued after simultaneous regional elections on Dec. 9 to avoid further political dispute within the party prior to the elections.
'If I issue the decree before Dec. 9, I'm afraid there will be political consequences on the elections,' said Yasonna after meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla in Jakarta on Tuesday as reported by tribunnew.com.
He advised leaders of the Golkar Party to focus on efforts to help its candidates win in the elections.
The Supreme Court annulled the outcomes of two separate national congresses that separately elected Aburizal and Agung Laksono as party chairman. It ruled that the outcome of a national congress in Riau in 2009, which elected Aburizal and Agung was the deputy, should be upheld.
The Supreme Court ruled that Minister Yasonna had to issue the decree no later than January. The minister stressed that there would be no leadership vacuum in Golkar. 'I rest assure that the decree will be issued this year. I have been given a time limit by the court,' he added. (bbn)
