Soekarno-Hatta airport applies tighter security

The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta has intensified security procedures with the assistance of hundreds of National Police personnel and members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) following the escalating number of terror threats from extremist groups around the world.
"[We are also receiving assistance] from the police's Gegana bomb squad, Densus 88 and bloodhounds," said Soekarno-Hatta Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Roycke Langie on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.
He said that more personnel would be added to patrol posts as well.
"[We will also] conduct raids, question suspicious individuals and observe people coming in and out," said Roycke.
According to state-run airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II corporate secretary Agus Haryadi, the increased security was part of the airport's effort to anticipate terror attacks from the radical Islamic State (IS) movement.
"Some of the things that [we] particularly pay attention to are passengers who carry suitcases, freight cars and passengers roaming around," said Agus. "For instance, if there's a suitcase left unattended, even for only ten minutes, [security] officers will immediately secure it."
Agus added that the airport's Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 would be fully secured by additional personnel from the Army (TNI AD), the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU), respectively.
"In each terminal there will be hundreds of TNI personnel as well as around 2,000 officers from Aviation Security [Avsec], Brimob [Mobile Brigade] and K9 units," said Agus.
He added that the increased security would also be extended to the parking lots and the airport's other open areas. (kes)(+)
