mployees at Curug Sewu tourism park in Kendal on Tuesday bid farewell to an 88-year-old male Sumatran elephant named Ludo that died the day before at one of Central Java's popular tourist destinations.
Ludo died on Monday at 9:45 a.m. local time and was buried the next day after a veterinarian from the local husbandry agency confirmed that he had died from natural causes.
'[On the day of his death], he ate bulrush, banana and palm sugar, just like usual. There was not any sign [that he was about to pass away], he even played around with his mahout,' Curug Sewu head Prayogo said, as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday evening.
Ludo was buried in a three-meter-deep grave located beside his cage in Curug Sewu. Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Indonesia has said the current population of Sumatran elephants was fewer than 1,000 animals, 69 percent fewer elephants than 25 years ago.
