Security conditions at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta have been deemed safe following threats by the state's most-wanted terrorist suspect, according to state-owned airport operator PT Angakasa Pura II president director Budi Karya Sumadi.

In coordination with the National Police and the Indonesian Military, the airport intensified security this week as a preventative measure following escalating number of terror threats from extremist groups around the world, Budi said.

'€œWe have increased patrols around the airport zones, implemented tighter security checks and carried out random checks of any suspicious vehicles in the area,'€ Budi told thejakartapost.com on Thursday.

Budi also said that the airport would strengthen coordination with all stakeholders. He added that information would be shared between all airline and airport personnel to encourage coordination in appraising safety and security concerns.

Transportation Ministry spokesperson Julius Barata told the Associated Press that Indonesia'€™s alert level had been upgraded from '€œgreen'€ to '€œyellow'€ because of the threat to civil aviation after the Paris attacks on Nov. 13.

Jakarta police chief Commissioner General Tito Karnavian also spoke to the Associated Press, saying that authorities have increased security across all of Indonesia following a propaganda video that appeared on social media supposedly containing the voice of Indonesia'€™s most-wanted terrorist, Santoso, who also goes by the name of Abu Wardah.

The 9-minute video, which appeared on Saturday, called for attacks to be carried out at the Jakarta Police headquarters and the Presidential Palace. The video was blocked by the government on Monday.

Karnavian said that police were still investigating the video to confirm whether Abu Wardah was indeed the one featured in the video, or whether it was the work of one of his followers.

Abu Wardah, who claims to lead a terrorist network by the name of East Indonesia Mujahiddin, has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. He has taken responsibility for the killings of police officers and civilians in Poso, Central Sulawesi where he also allegedly runs a terrorist training camp.

Indonesia'€™s security forces began a large manhunt for Abu Wardah and his group in Poso earlier this month, but they still remain at large. (dan)(+)
