Jakarta may experience major flooding in January and February, when the rainy season hits its peak in the city and its surrounding areas, including the upper areas of Depok and Bogor, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Citing BMKG data, Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Deni Wahyu Heriyanto said on Tuesday that downpours in January and February would reach between 50 and 100 millimeters per day, which was enough to inundate dozens of the city's flood-prone areas.

'€œOur worse scenario is that the heavy rains will occur simultaneously several times along the day for several days within one month,'€ Deni said at City Hall on Tuesday.

BMKG estimated that high-intensity rains would not only hit Jakarta but also Puncak and other areas in Bogor, West Java, worsening flooding in Jakarta, particularly along many rivers, whose upstream areas were located in the mountainous areas near Puncak.

Major flooding hit Jakarta in February 2007, killing 50 people, inundating 70,000 homes, displacing more than 500,000 people and causing losses of Rp 8 trillion in private property and urban infrastructure damage.

According to Deni, his agency would take preparatory measures in anticipation of the flooding.

Deni said that in the last three years, his institution had cooperated with 201 community units in flood-prone areas to help recover flood victims. (bbn) (+)
