Biting back: House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Fadli Zon speaks to the media, accusing Attorney General M Prasetyo of being âpolitically motivatedâ after the latter launched an investigation into alleged corruption on the part of House Speaker Setya Novanto

House of Representatives deputy speaker Fadli Zon has criticized the Attorney General's Office (AGO)'s decision to investigate an ethics violation case, in which House speaker Setya Novanto stands accused of misusing the names of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in relation to the renegotiation of the extension of gold and copper miner PT Freeport Indonesia's work contract.
The Gerindra Party lawmaker claimed that there were political interests behind the AGO's move to investigate Setya's case.
'The attorney general [M Prasetyo] is politically motivated. His move is not aimed at enforcing the law. Everything he has done is politically motivated,' Fadli said as quoted by kompas.com at the House complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The politician added that there was nothing wrong with a meeting between Setya, who was accompanied by oil businessman Riza Chalid and Freeport president director Maroef Sjamsoeddin.
He claimed that in the transcript of the conversation between the three people, at no point did Setya ask Freeport to give 20 percent of the shares in the company to President Jokowi and VP Kalla.
'What wicked conspiracy are you talking about? It was just a discussion,' said Fadli. He further connected Prasetyo's move to investigate Setya's case with the former's background as a politician from the NasDem Party.
According to Fadli, it was wrong to appoint a member of a political party as attorney general, as it risked bringing political skullduggery into legal cases.
'The political interests in Setya's case are very strong, especially the interests of the NasDem Party. I once reminded Jokowi that if he wanted to appoint an attorney general, he or she should not be from a political party,' he said.
Earlier, Prasetyo confirmed that the AGO had launched its investigation into the case.
'It is still at the investigation phase. We are still deepening our understanding of the case,' Prasetyo said on Tuesday. He added that the AGO would investigate the alleged conspiracy as a corruption crime.(ebf)
