Two dead in South Jakarta elevator free fall

Two died while another sustained injuries in an elevator free-falling accident at the Arkadia office complex in TB Simatupang, South Jakarta, on Thursday

wo died while another sustained injuries in an elevator free-falling accident at the Arkadia office complex in TB Simatupang, South Jakarta, on Thursday.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Mohammad Iqbal said that the two deceased victims were identified as Dyah Setyoningrum, who died at the scene, and Ki Agus Roy, who died shortly after being admitted to Siloam Hospital in South Jakarta. Both are employees of Nestle Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the one injured victim, identified as Abdul Rahman, a janitor, is undergoing treatment at Siloam.

'€œThree people were inside the elevator when the accident occurred,'€ he said.

He said that the three victims were heading to the seventh floor from the third floor of the building when the cable of the elevator suddenly snapped before the elevator reached the seventh floor.

South Jakarta criminal detective chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Audie Latuheru said that the police would investigate the cause of the incident before making any conclusions as whether the accident was caused by human error, such as failure to detect indication of technical malfunction on the elevator when conducting a regular check.

'€œWe currently cannot make any conclusions'€ he said, adding that a technician had conducted a regular maintenance check on the elevator on Sunday and that it was functioning properly at that time.

He said that based on the technician'€™s note, the top of the elevator was rusty, but maintenance was carried out to fix the issue.

'€œWe are currently getting information from five people. We are also checking CCTV footage,'€ he added.

The elevator would be closed for an indefinite period of time, he said.

Pasar Minggu Police chief Comr. Zaky Alkazar Nasution said they were questioning four people: Two technicians from the elevator company and two officials from Nestle.

'€œWhat we know now is that the elevator'€™s brake light was on but the brake was not functioning, hence the free fall, '€ he explained.

Meanwhile, Nestle Indonesia'€™s corporate communication manager, Nur Shilla Christianto, said the company was focusing on providing support to the victim'€™s family members, while assisting the police determine in determining the cause of the incident.

The body of one of the deceased victims, Dyah, who was taken to Marine Hospital in Cilandak, was released to her family and laid to rest on Thursday, according to a relative of the victim.

Similar elevator accidents have occurred in other buildings in the city in the past.

On Oct. 1 this year, an elevator at Taman Kemayoran Apartment, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, fell, injuring nine.

Previously on Feb. 17 this year, an elevator pendulum at Blok M Plaza in South Jakarta fell from the upper ground floor, killing 35-year -old maintenance worker Muhammad Anwar, who was cleaning an elevator pipe under it on the ground floor.

On Dec. 24, 2013, Mukhtar Natzir, 24, a warehouse worker at an electronics company located at the Galaxy shop-houses in Bekasi, West Java, was crushed by an elevator at the shop. The victim was unloading goods when he slipped and fell between a floor and elevator shaft. The elevator was moving with Mukhtar'€™s body wedged between. (saf)
