The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry marked New Year's Eve on Thursday by sinking 10 more fishing boats, whose crew members were proven guilty of illegally fishing in Indonesian waters.
The Indonesian government has sunk more than 110 fishing boats this year in its efforts to send a strong signal to illegal fishermen.
The action was carried out by the ministry in cooperation with the Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force (Satgas 115).
'The sinking of the boats was aimed at eliminating the evidence of the crime [that they had committed] in Indonesian waters,' said Satgas 115 executive head Vice Admiral Widodo in Jakarta on Thursday as reported by tribunnews.com.
The sinking of the 10 fishing boats was carried out simultaneously in four locations: one boat in Belawan, North Sumatra, one boat in Tarempa, Riau Islands, two boats in Tarakan, North Kalimantan and six boats in Tahuna, North Sulawesi. (bbn)
