AJA AMPAT: President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and First Lady Iriana visited Pianemu Bay in Raja Ampat, West Papua, on Friday, as part of Jokowi's tour of the country's eastern region.
Jokowi and his entourage departed from Waiwo Pier in Waisai subdistrict at around 8 a.m. local time. Following a one-and-a-half-hour speedboat trip, Jokowi arrived at Pianemu, accompanied by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya and Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki, as reported by Antara news agency.
Located in the Coral Triangle, the heart of the world coral reef biodiversity, the Raja Ampat archipelago encompasses 35,800 square kilometers of land and sea off the northwestern tip of West Papua. The seas around Raja Ampat are home to the richest variety of marine species in the world, including 75 percent of all known species of coral.
Jokowi's visit to Raja Ampat was part of a series of visits to the country's eastern region, including East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
In NTT, Jokowi is scheduled to visit the town of Atambua to join the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Rotiklot Dam in a region that shares its border with Timor Leste.
