President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo released 190 birds at the botanical gardens in Bogor, West Java, on Sunday.
Bird species released include the Javan myna, pied myna (Asian pied starling), starling, collared dove, barred ground dove, pied triller, yellow-vented bulbul, sooty-headed bulbul and black-headed bulbul. The President released the birds in a relaxed atmosphere, with no tight protocol procedure.
In February, Jokowi freed hundreds of birds at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta and the Bogor Presidential Palace. As well as birds, the President on the same occasion also released various fish into the Ciliwung River and fish ponds in the botanical gardens.
'The President released the fish and birds to help efforts to preserve natural ecosystems, especial in urban areas,' presidential communication team member Ari Dwipayana said as quoted by kompas.com.
Ari explained that accompanied by his son, Jokowi himself bought the birds at Pramuka bird market on Jl. Pramuka, East Jakarta, on Saturday.
At the bird market, he said, Jokowi had visited bird kiosks one at a time. 'While talking to vendors and customers, he picked 190 birds from various species, which he later bought,' said Ari. (ebf)
