Nepalis spend 171.16 percent of their weekly income to feed a family of four, a finding by travel advisory site MoveHub showed.
Nepal lies sixth in the ranking of most costly countries where people spend over 171 percent of their weekly income on food costs. According to the site, Uganda is the most expensive country in the world for a weekly shop where over 275 percent of weekly wage goes to food bills. The study is based upon the local cost of grocery staples, compared with local wages. Ethiopia and Kenya complete the top three spot with Bangladesh the only South Asian country lying on 10th position.
The cheapest country in the world for groceries is Qatar, where a food shop only makes up 2.62 per cent of a wage, followed by Macao (3.66 per cent) and Kuwait (4.38 per cent), according to the site.
Recently, a report by Nepal Rastra Bank had showed that inflation had jumped to 11.6 percent with prices of pulses, legumes, ghee, oil among other foodstuffs skyrocketing. The rise in inflation is largely attributed to the ongoing Tarai protests and the unofficial blockade imposed by India upon Nepal. (kes)
