he police announced on Wednesday that terror suspect Edi Santoso, apprehended earlier by the National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism unit, was to have played a major role in recruitment for the Western Indonesia Mujahidin (MIB) movement.
An operative for MIB leader Abu Roban, Edi was arrested on Tuesday at his parents' house on Jl. Selat Malaka 5, Panjang Selatan subdistrict, Panjang district, Lampung, for allegedly raising funds for the MIB through illegal activity.
'Edi raised funds by robbing banks,' Bandar Lampung Police chief Sr. Comr. Hari Nugroho said at Edi's parents' house on Wednesday.
According to Hari, Edi robbed a state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia branch in Pringsewu, Lampung in 2013, led by Abu Roban, and used the ill-gotten money to fund MIB terror activities.
Abu Roban was shot dead by police in Kendal, Central Java, in May 2013.
In the same month in 2013, Densus 88 also arrested Solihin, 41, Muhammad Ali, 20, Dedy Rofaizal, 42, and Abu Nabila, 48, in separate locations in Bandar Lampung, Lampung for their alleged involvement in the bank robbery.
The National Police, through Densus 88, captured the terror suspect who was on the police's most-wanted list in Lampung.
According to National Police chief spokesman Agus Rianto, Edi is also a member of the Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) movement led by Santoso in Poso, Central Sulawesi.
'The concerned person was also involved in fund-raising activities carried out some time ago with Abu Roban,' said Agus at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Agus said Edi moved from one place to another at one point to avoid police detection.
'During hiding he joined Santoso's group,' said Agus.
Densus 88 have been pursuing Edi alias Sukri, for the last two months.
Yanto, a resident of Panjang, where the suspect was apprehended, said a person who claimed to be a police intelligence member rented a house near Edi's parents and spoke with locals.
'After the person left, a long-haired man arrived to rent a house near Edi's parents. He claimed to be a central intelligence member,' Yanto said on Tuesday evening.
Yanto added that the long-haired man also took part in the raid on Edi's parents' home.
A neighbor of Edi's parents, Sri Wahyuni, said Edi attended college in Yogyakarta after graduating high school. According to her, Edi was previously employed by his older brother in Kalimantan.
