he Purwakarta Police in West Java said on Thursday that they had formed a team to track arsonists who set fire to the regency's iconic Arjuna Statue earlier in the day.
West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said police had received information on the arson attack from the public. 'During a patrol at 4:10 a.m. [on Thursday], our patrol officers received the report and immediately rushed to the scene of the crime,' he said.
The statue, located at Wanayasa Reservoir, was built by the local administration seven years ago. Based on photographs from police, the fire only spared the statue's leg up to its thigh.
The incident is not the first case of vandalism in Purwakarta. In September 2011, a group of people vandalized several statues, such as the Gatotkaca at the Comro intersection, Semar at the Bunder junction and Bima on Jl. Baru. The perpetrators said that they had vandalized the statues because they had deemed them inappropriate.
