wo fires broke out in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Sunday, one of which killed a teenager, La Hamid, who was sick and lying paralyzed in his bedroom.

'€œThe victim died in his bedroom. He could not breathe as his room was full of smoke,'€ said Hendra, a firefighter with the Balikpapan Disaster Mitigation Agency.

He said that based on the testimonies of witnesses the 18-year-old Hamid, who was from the Telaga Mas area, Batakan, East Balikpapan, was believed to have been playing with matches that set fire to his mattress.

The fire, which started at about 11 a.m., was extinguished in an hour.

Earlier at 9:30 am, another fire destroyed two houses on Jl. Banjar, in the Gunungsari Ilir subdistrict of Central Balikpapan, injuring two residents.

The victims were rushed to the Gunung Malang General Hospital.

The fire originated in one of the houses belonged to a woman named Inge, who was cooking in her kitchen using firewood.
