T

he Denpasar District Court has sentenced Australian national Scott Dobson, 53, to a year and four months in prison for assaulting the manager of a nightclub in Kuta, Bali.

The court's panel of judges declared Dobson guilty of violating Article 170 subsection 2 of the Criminal Code on assault.

"We declare  the defendant Scott Dobson guilty of committing violence against the victim, leading to injuries,” presiding judge Ni Made Sukereni said as he read out the verdict on Monday.

The verdict is slightly lighter than the demand of one year and six months' imprisonment sought by prosecutors.

"During the court proceedings, there was no reason found to forgive the offense. The defendant should be held responsible and undergo punishment for what he has done," Sukereni added.

Dobson, who has been residing in Bali for some time, reportedly landed a punch on Kenneth James Wickes, a Canadian, at Kuta's Sky Garden night club in September 2013 after a disagreement over an unpaid bill. According to the indictment, Dobson was accompanied by his relative Ben Steven and friend Alex Bajawa during the assault. Dobson was not arrested until December 2015, while Steven and Bajawa remain at large.

During the trial, Dobson denied all the allegations, claiming never to have struck Wickes. However, on Monday, he decided to accept the verdict and said he would not file any appeal.
