he Jakarta administration will cooperate with Singaporean company Memiontec Ltd., through its affiliated company PT Memiontec Indonesia, to develop a water treatment plant to convert water from the West Flood Canal into clean water.
The water processing installation will be constructed in a city forest in Penjaringan, North Jakarta this year and its construction is scheduled to be completed within one-and-a-half years, said Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.
Singapore has sophisticated water treatment technology, said Ahok.
“In Singapore, even dirty water can be treated and can be directly consumed. We have to take a cue from Singapore,” Ahok said at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Memiontec Indonesia director Dewi Kwek said the water treatment facility would use membrane technology to produce clean water with a consistent quality.
The water from the water treatment facility will be managed by the city-owned PT Jakarta Utilitas Propertindo (JUP), said Ahok.
Private water operator PT PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) will buy the water that will have been processed by Memiontec.
Ahok has requested the JUP to assist city-owned water operator PAM Jaya to produce more clean water for residents.
Jakarta lacks 9,000 liters of clean water per second. With this partnership, the city administration aims to close the gap to 500 liters per second. (bbn)
