nternational efforts to end the Syrian conflict as well as to eradicate the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group are the key points to strengthening counterterrorism efforts in Indonesia, a top anti-terror official said on Thursday.
National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian said that as long as IS kept committing violence in the name of radical Islam and the clash between the Syrian government and rebels remained unresolved, the conflicts would continue to spill over into other countries, including Indonesia.
"Therefore, international political agreements are an important issue, in addition to the [counterterrorism] measures," Tito said following his confirmation hearing with members of the House of Representatives as part of his nomination for the post of National Police chief.
Efforts to neutralize terrorist cells in Indonesia such as the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) led by the nation’s most-wanted man, Santoso, in Poso, Central Sulawesi, should be implemented alongside operations to eradicate IS at the global level, Tito added.
A purported IS recruitment video, which urges radicals in Southeast Asia to unite under Isnilon Hapilon, leader of the small but brutal Abu Sayyaf group in the Philippines, was also released on Thursday. The video was released in five languages – Arabic, English, Filipino, Indonesian and Malay.
