ifteen police officers were arrested for attempting to take revenge against soccer fans who had attacked police during a match between the Jakarta Soccer Club (Persija) and South Sumatra’s Sriwijaya FC on Friday.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said the 15 officers were accused of raiding the Jakmania soccer fans club on Jl. Suharjo and Jl. Minagkabau in South Jakarta at 3 a.m. on Sunday.
“We encountered our members (police officers) during the joint operation in South Jakarta,” said Awi as reported by tribunnews.com on Monday.
The 15 police officers who were arrested were from the West Java, Baten and Jakarta Police headquarters. They violated traffic laws and took action without any orders from their superiors.
They were questioned by investigators from the Jakarta Police’s professions and security division, Awi added.
Previously the police had also arrested seven members of Jakmania who were accused of provoking their friends to violence.
A number of police officers had become victims of members of Jakmania after their soccer team was defeated by Sriwijaya FC at the Bung Karno Sports Stadium in Central Jakarta on Friday. Four officers are still in hospital, including Brig. Hanafi, who suffered the most serious wounds.
Meanwhile on Saturday, dozens of unidentified people attacked Disto Jakmania – a shop that sells souvenirs related to the Jakarta soccer club – on Jl. Percetaan Negara Raya in Central Jakarta.
Aris, one of the shop attendants, said the attackers vandalized the store and attacked seven people inside. Four were hospitalized. (bbn)
