ne person has died after a fire engulfed a shophouse, which had been used as a photo studio, on Jl. Hayam Wuruk in the Pleburan area of Semarang, Central Java.
The victim has been identified as 62-year-old Anita, who was trapped in the shophouse when the fire broke out.
The head of operations and control at the Semarang Fire Department, Sumarsono, said Anita could not escape from the fire because she was suffering from a stroke.
“We deployed 12 firefighting vehicles to put out the fire so that it would not spread to other buildings,” he said.
A number of residents in the neighborhood said they threw stones at the window of the shophouse in an attempt to warn its owner of the fire. However, the ailing Anita could not escape herself.
On Saturday, June 18, fires also hit three shophouses in Kanjengan Market, Semarang. No fatalities were reported in last week’s incident, which cost hundreds of millions rupiah in damages.
