ndonesia’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it had yet received any reports of Indonesian nationals being victims of a series of bomb attacks on Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, late on Tuesday evening, which claimed the lives of at least 28 people and wounded more than 60.
The ministry’s director for the protection of Indonesian nationals and entities abroad, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, said Indonesia’s consulate general in Istanbul had assigned staffers to intensively monitor news regarding the attacks and coordinate with local authorities to ensure the safety of Indonesian nationals there.
“No Indonesian victims have been reported so far,” said Lalu, adding that Indonesia strongly condemned the suicide bombings.
The government also advised all Indonesian citizens currently in Istanbul to stay vigilant and to ensure their own safety by avoiding public places. “We remind all Indonesian citizens to follow the directives of local authorities,” he said.
Based on ministry data, 728 Indonesians are currently residing in Turkey, with 310 of them students and the rest are workers.
The Indonesian Embassy in Istanbul has opened a hotline on +905319831534 for those who need assistance or further information, while it also has another hotline for family members in Indonesia of those in Turkey on +6281290070027. (sha/dmr)
