Indonesia sees mild-Inflation in June The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a 0.09 percent month-on-month deflation in February, the second deflation after last year's February deflation of 0.36 percent. (tribunnews.com/-)

T

he Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has announced a modest June inflation rate of 0.66 percent month-on-month (MoM) and 3.45 percent year-on-year (YoY), with the Idul Fitri inflationary pressure not fully accumulated during the month.

Air transportation tickets were the main inflation driver this month with a 8.27 percent MoM increase. Most people bought tickets for the traditional homecoming (mudik) a month before Idul Fitri. Chicken meat and fish followed with 5.36 and 2.15 percent price increases, respectively.

“The increase in airline tickets is actually a good sign, showing strong purchasing power. The inflation in fish prices shows that the government’s measures to increase fish consumption have taken effect,” BPS head Suryamin told thejakartapost.com on Friday in Jakarta.

However, he continued, La Nina has been affecting the fish supply recently as fisherman stayed ashore due to bad weather and dangerous waves. On the contrary, La Nina had positively affected agriculture, as it created a wet summer.

“The cultivation period was longer, becoming a whole year. Thus, we will have more stable rice stock this year,” Suryamin continued.

Historically, BPS records a contraction in the rice price after June, which then spirals upward in November and December because the harvest season usually ends in May and is followed by a period of depleted stock. (ags)
