Greater Jakarta: City to add 91 new garbage trucks this year

T

he Jakarta Sanitation Agency is planning to add 91 new garbage trucks to its fleet this year to transport the capital’s waste to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Treatment Area (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java, which is now being managed by the administration after it recently took it over from a private operator.

The trucks, which cost up to Rp 1.7 billion (US$130,000) each, will replace old trucks and are to maximize the transport of garbage from Jakarta to the waste treatment facility, Isnawa Adji, the agency’s head, said Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.

Jakarta produces about 7,500 tons of garbage a day and some of the garbage being brought to the facility often dropped onto the road because the trucks are old, which caused Bekasi residents to protest. The new trucks will be expected to resolve the issue.

“The comparison [of loading capability between the new trucks and the old ones] is three to one because in the new trucks garbage can be compacted,” Isnawa explained.

The new trucks will take garbage from strategic locations in the capital, such as along Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta and Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, as well as from Kota Tua, West Jakarta
