joint committee established to evaluate a reclamation project in Jakarta Bay has never recommended the termination of Islet G development as stated by then coordinating maritime affairs minister Rizal Ramli, who lost his position in a Cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, an official has claimed.

Members of the joint committee are representatives of the Jakarta administration, the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister, the Maritime Affairs and Fishery Ministry and the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

“I was confused when the statement was made during a press conference. I had questioned why it was different [from the committee recommendation],” said head of the Jakarta Development Planning Board Tuti Kusumawati, who represents the administration on the committee, on Wednesday.

Tuti was referring to a press conference during which Rizal announced that the development of G Islet would be terminated on June 30.

The joint committee’s recommendations included the redesign of 14 reclaimed islets in Jakarta Bay, including Islet G. The redesign is to consider the utilization of the reclaimed islets and various problems related to the reclamation.

“So the reclamation should still be continued, but it should be redesigned,” Tuti said at City Hall, failing to elaborate on the detail recommendation of the joint committee, which was established after representatives of the institutions inspected the implementation of reclamation. (bbn).
