eman Ahok, the volunteer group that supported Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s independent candidacy ahead of the city’s gubernatorial election, says it will transfer funds it has raised to the governor’s election team.
"We will think about the procedure [for transferring the funds], but we do plan to transfer it to Ahok's election team," Teman Ahok spokesperson Singgih Widyastono said on Friday.
Earlier in June, the volunteer group claimed to have made Rp 5 billion (US$381,679) from selling merchandise. It said it planned to use the funds to finance the process of collecting and verifying the identity cards of voters who pledged support for Ahok’s independent bid.
It is not clear if Teman Ahok can transfer all the funds it has collected to Ahok’s campaign team as the Regional Elections Law sets donation limits of Rp 75 million for private individuals and Rp 750 million for private institutions.
Ahok has now scrapped the plan to run as an independent and has accepted a nomination by three political parties: the Golkar Party, Nasdem Party and Hanura Party. The parties are preparing a campaign team for the incumbent governor.
Singgih assured that the ID copies provided by Ahok’s supporters would not be misused, saying supporters could retrieve them at Teman Ahok’s headquarters. (ary)
