The second stage of the 2016 Tour de Singkarak road race was owned by Iranian rider Rahim Emami, who dominated the 119.5-kilometer route on Sunday, while Australian Dylan Newberry kept hold of the yellow jersey.
Newberry snatched the yellow jersey after winning the first stage on Saturday, which stretched 95.8 km from Singkarak Lake to Ngalau Indah in Payakumbuh.
Starting in second place in Limapuluh Kota regency on Sunday, Emami, a member of the 2015 champion Pishgaman Cycling team, clocked in at two hours, 55 minutes and 34 seconds to earn victory — thanks to being the fastest in a sprint race against Australian Jesse James Ewart, who finished second.
The third spot was secured by Pishgaman’s Reza Hosseini at 2:55.42.
The finish line was outside the Istano Basa Pagaruyung palace in Tanah Datar.
Yellow jersey holder Newberry performed well in the first stage, but the 22-year-old from the Data #3 Cisco team finished 30th on Sunday after being involved in an accident. Left behind, the young rider peddled hard to reach the finish line.
The new stage winner showed that the Singkarak race offers tight competition, which could lead to a new champion by the end of the tour.
Newberry also retained the green jersey as the fastest sprinter, while Pishgaman’s Amir Kolahdouz Hagh holds the red polka-dot jersey as the best climber.
Regardless of the domination of foreign cyclists in the top three, Indonesian riders showed they had the potential to attack as Rastra Patria Dinawan of Team Indonesia finished seventh at 2:55.54 in the Sunday race.
Wawan Setyobudi, the Indonesian team manager, said he was satisfied with the team’s performance as it had delivered on its strategy to be part of the leading group throughout the second stage.
“They managed to stay in the big leading group, which was our expectation,” Wawan said after the race.
The 122.8-km Stage 3 takes place on Monday, starting at the Equator monument in Bonjol, Pasaman regency, and finishing at Simpang Empat Market in West Pasaman regency.
As many as 93 riders are set to participate in the third-stage battle.
