A

woman was caught attempting to transport a dead baby inside a suitcase on a flight from Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong, Papua, to Makassar, South Sulawesi, where it was to be buried.

Airport authorities and the police foiled the attempt, but later helped arrange transportation of the corpse after finding that the mother could not afford the cargo charges.

The woman, identified as Ramlah, 36, told the police that she wanted to take the baby, who died after being born prematurely at Sorong General Hospital on Sunday, to her hometown for burial.

"Police questioning the parent found no criminal intent," Sorong Police chief of detectives First Insp. Muhadi was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

"The mother also did not understand administrative procedure to send a corpse and she did not have Rp16 million (US$1,218) to pay for the service," Muhadi said. (dmr)
