Island focus: Festival boosts floriculture, livelihoods

T

he Tomohon International Flower Festival (TIFF) was held on Monday with around 30 participants from Australia, Singapore, Japan, China and the ASEAN Secretariat brightening up a flower float procession.

The event was attended by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and former House of Representatives speaker Akbar Tanjung, as well as officials from various ministries.

Tomohon Legislative Council (DPRD) speaker Miky Wenur said the international event would be held annually. A bylaw on the matter is being deliberated.

“We, members of the legislature, support the activity. Around Rp 800 million [US$59,000] has been set aside to make the event a success,” said Wenur.

He added that TIFF was formerly known as the Tournament of Flowers (ToF) and only featured participants from Indonesia. He added that Tomohon had great potential in floriculture. “So, the government wants floriculture to be Tomohon’s primary product. In addition, Tomohon flowers will be known worldwide,” said Wenur.

He expressed hope that TIFF would improve the livelihoods of local people. Besides that, farmers have the opportunity to become world-class flower entrepreneurs.
